Dysfunctional self-consciousness is characteristic of the second stage of soul awakening. Mental confusion along with irrational thinking and conflicted emotional state is common. Egocentric preoccupation with the illusional sense of personality-self prevails. One may be superstitious, fascinated with magic, endeavor to acquire supernatural powers, believe in angels, or be attracted to mediumship and ”channeling” in misguided endeavors to communicate with beings in other spheres who are presumed to have exceptional knowledge. Powers of intelectual discrimination are weak. Addictions, sensual desires, compulsive cravings, obsessions, hallucinations, dependent emotional relationships, self-defeating behaviours, neurotic needs, complaints, fault finding, and fantasies about everyday matters and higher realities are common. Emotions and subconscious conditioning tend to determine thinking and behavior. When meditating, one may be more interested in perceiving mental phenomena of having a religious experience than in spiritual growth. The soul’s life forces are only partially aroused.

Unconscious is characteristic of the first stage of the soul’s involvement with metter, during which it’s awareness is so completely identified with the mind and the physical body that is mistakenly presumes itself to be a mind-body being. Some common symptoms are mental dullness, apathy, boredom, and provincialism. Rigid beliefs and unreasoned opinions tend to prevail.Spiritual awareness is minimal. Intelectual powers are week and undeveloped. The soul’s life forces are mostly dormant.

Earth, water and air are all means of purification, and I have given you methods, exercises to do with them. But the most powerful means of purification is fire. Nothing can resist fire. The initiatic tradition therefore teaches that humans have to undergo fire for transformation to take place – not physical fire, of course, but psychic fire. On the psychic plane there are two sorts of fire: the fire of suffering and the fire of spiritual love. All those who are very stubborn and determined to walk the path of wickedness and who can only be made to reflect and change through trials are forced to undergo the fire of suffering. Those who want to avoid that fire must work with the fire of love, which will make them luminous and radiant. And although they still have to suffer – since on earth trials are unavoidable – the fire of spiritual love will burn more brightly in them and enable them to overcome their trials. The ordinary fire of suffering enslaves men and women; the fire of spiritual love sets them free.
